Dr. Paul Beaulé.“Research helps us better understand what we’re doing in the operating room, and asks the question, ‘Is this the best we can do?’” - Dr. Paul Beaulé.As an orthopedic surgeon specialized in preserving and replacing hips, Dr. Paul Beaulé has seen first-hand how these surgeries can dramatically improve his patients’ quality of life. An overarching motivation for his research is understanding what outcomes are most important to patients, and what a successful hip surgery looks like to them.

One of his research focuses is surgery that can improve pain, stop damage and hopefully prevent a hip replacement in people with pre-arthritic hip disease. This includes preventing hip problems in young athletes. For those who do need hip replacement, he’s studying whether people with new ceramic hip implants designed to let them be more active can return  to their desired activities and have improved quality of life. Dr. Beaulé is also studying the results of The Ottawa Hospital’s same-day joint replacement program, which focuses on getting patients home as safely and early as possible.

“Research helps us better understand what we’re doing in the operating room, and asks the question, ‘Is this the best we can do?’” says Dr. Beaulé.

Dr. Beaulé has published over 280 papers and given more than 200 lectures and workshops in several areas in orthopaedic research. He is among the top 2% most-cited authors in the world in the field of orthopedics.

Dr. Beaulé was recently appointed as a scientist in the Clinical Epidemiology Program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He is an orthopedic surgeon and Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at The Ottawa Hospital, Professor of Surgery and Division Head of orthopedics at the University of Ottawa.

Research at The Ottawa Hospital led by scientists like Dr. Beaulé is possible because of generous donations to The Ottawa Hospital Foundation.

The Ottawa Hospital is a leading academic health, research and learning hospital proudly affiliated with the University of Ottawa.
