I’m proud our research findings are used around the world to quickly diagnose and treat this condition.”-Dr. Philip Wells, Senior Scientist and Chief/Chair of the Department of Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa.Dr. Philip Wells has received a major honour recognizing his outstanding contributions to advancing care in blood and blood vessel sciences both in Canada and around the world.
He is the winner of the 2020 Distinguished Lecturer Award in Blood and Blood Vessel Sciences, awarded jointly by the Canadian Society of Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology (CSATVB) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (CIHR-ICRH).
Dr. Wells’ research focuses on blood clots in the veins, known as venous thrombosis. His contributions include clinical prediction rules to help diagnose deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, blood clots in the legs and lungs, respectively.
These rules are used world-wide and have been incorporated into many national and organizational guidelines. He is currently investigating venous thrombosis caused by cancer, and how to use artificial intelligence to improve or develop clinical decision rules. Dr. Wells has received over 30 million dollars in peer reviewed research funding and authored over 350 scientific articles.
