Researchers awarded $1.6M to improve care for cardiovascular disease

middle-aged coupleThe Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada has awarded $1.6M to researchers at The Ottawa Hospital, affiliated with the University of Ottawa. Dr. Gregoire Le Gal received both a $320,000 salary award and an $188,628 operating grant for his research, focused on improving the diagnosis of dangerous blood clots in the legs, arms and lungs (called venous thromboembolism). Dr. Lana Castellucci received a salary award of $265,000 for her research on improving treatment of venous thromboembolism. Drs. Jeffrey Perry and Shane English each received salary awards for their research on a hemorrhagic form of stroke called subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Dr. Perry received $320,000 for research on SAH care in the emergency department and Dr. English’s received $260,000 for research focused on outcomes and the care in the intensive care unit. Dr. Xiaohui Zha received a $274,530 grant to investigate the relationship between cholesterol and inflammation in macrophages. Drs. Alexander Sorisky and Jeffrey Dilworth are co-investigators on this grant.
