Dr. Susan Rogers Van Katwyk

Recent PhD graduate, Dr. Susan Rogers Van Katwyk will receive an honourable mention for the Worton Researcher in Training Award for her impressive research on strategies to fight antimicrobial resistance. Her recent study published in PLOS Medicine shows that little rigorous research has been done on national strategies to date, and provides a list of possible ideas. She has presented these findings at the World Health Organization (WHO) and has contributed to a Public Health Agency of Canada report on social and cultural drivers of unnecessary antibiotic use in Canada. She also led a research project for the WHO to examine the toolkit for training healthcare workers on antimicrobial resistance, and to develop recommendations. Dr. Rogers Van Katwyk has developed a research framework to encourage governments and researchers to undertake rigorous evaluations of future interventions to fight antibiotic resistance. Her interdisciplinary background, including epidemiology, biochemistry, gender studies, and international relations, make her well suited to this field. She was co-supervised by Drs. Jeremy Grimshaw and Steven Hoffman.
