A Canadian First: Ottawa orthopaedic researchers win top clinical research award three years running

Orthopaedic surgeryFor the third year in a row, researchers from the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery have won The Canadian Orthopedic Foundation’s top clinical research award, worth $20,000. This year it was awarded to Dr. Geoffrey Wilkin, to test whether a minimally invasive surgery can improve outcome for people with hip dysplasia. The previous years’ awards went to Drs. Paul Beaulé and Stéphane Poitras to test a non-surgical alternative to treat the leading source of hip pain in healthy young people, and to Drs. Sasha Carsen, Kawan Rakhra, Mario Lamontagne, Leanne Ward, and Paul Beaulé for investigation into the role of physical activity in causing this hip pain. In addition, this year Dr. Sasha Carsen, Dr. Mark Campbell and Dr. Jeffrey Dilworth won the top basic science award worth $20,000 to find the best source of stem cells for cartilage regeneration. Dr. Hesham Abdelbary also won a Canadian Orthopaedic Research Legacy Award worth $20,000 to test a new strategy combining phages and antibiotics to treat infections on artificial joints in rats.
